The door creaked open just enough to let in a narrow streak of sunlight. There was a smell of escaping gas, dust and undefined chemicals in the air. I entered an abandoned laboratory, a place shrouded in mystery and forgotten by time.
The silence was only disturbed by the wind wheezing through the cracked windows. In this silence, imagination played tricks and every crack in the floor sounded like an echo of past experiments. Tension hung in the air, as if the ghosts of the past were still circulating between abandoned things. Where have the workers gone? What secret hides these dusty walls? These questions hung in the air like ghosts, fuelling an atmosphere of mystery.
As we pushed open the heavy wooden door, we were greeted by a sight that was both fascinating and unsettling. The room before us was a treasure trove of scientific curiosities, its shelves lined with an eclectic assortment of glassware, beakers, and vials. Tall glass stands held an array of Erlenmeyer flasks and volumetric flasks, their contents ranging from clear liquids to mysterious, swirling concoctions. Smaller test tubes and vials lined other shelves, their labels long faded and their contents unknown.
We ventured deeper into the laboratory, our footsteps echoing in the eerie silence. Each room we entered revealed more of the facility’s abandoned past. We passed through a room filled with empty crates that once held chemicals and reagents, their wooden frames bearing the weight of countless experiments. In another room, we found a collection of framed scientific posters, their once vibrant colors now muted and faded. Scattered among the posters were various pieces of machinery, their purpose long forgotten.
As we entered the first floor, a collection of old workers’ helmets appeared before our eyes. Walking down the corridor I found myself in a large room with a crane and a hook.
On the second floor were the rooms of other employees. In the building we were also able to look into the office area, which must have burned down. Through the keyhole we could see the control room. This was fully equipped, but it was secure. We also managed to get down to the strange rooms downstairs, there were desks, a tube TV and a large hall where we could also smell escaping gas. The hall was filled with leftover tools, bookcases, documents and alchemy stations. It was a wonderful but stressful experience.
Be careful and do not enter rooms where you can smell burning and gas!
